What does AI expose about your brand?

Lindsay Says

If your brand strategy is fuzzy, AI will make that fuzziness very, very loud.

AI is shifting everything at once: how fast you can move, what your products can do, what your organization can say, and to how broad an audience. A small team can now produce and publish content at the scale that once required departments. Products can gain AI-powered capabilities overnight. Your message can reach global audiences with no media budget.

Coupled with a precise North Star of your brand strategy, AI amplifies the right things with extraordinary power. Without it, AI amplifies the wrong things at the same intensity.

The only question is whether you will give AI something worth amplifying.

1. The cost of vagueness just got much higher.

AI is a car that can drive your business at a thousand miles an hour. Before AI, if you were only loosely sure of where you were headed, it was manageable. You were on a country road at 25 mph. You could course-correct as needed.

That's no longer an option. At this speed and scale, any lack of clarity upstream becomes catastrophic downstream.

AI makes content generation effectively free. The things that used to cap content output — time, headcount, cost — are vanishing. Whatever content you publish gets ingested by AI recommendation engines immediately. You can't get it back.

The businesses I see struggling haven't done the upstream work to define what matters most. “We're about comfort, and also speed, and also sustainability. We are about saving you money, and also about faster hiring, and also about saving the earth.” That vagueness kills brands.

Everlane was once about honestly sourced clothing, “radically transparent.” At its peak in 2020, Everlane was valued at an estimated $600 million. But then Everlane became about everything: quiet luxury, versatility, value, the millennial's buzzword fashion brand. It lost its way. No single North Star. When Shein purchased Everlane for a much-diminished $100 million, I was disappointed, but not surprised.

In contrast, these fashion brands have never lost their North Star:

  • Patagonia = earth-friendly
  • Universal Standard = size inclusivity
  • Filson = "buy-it-for-life" craftsmanship
  • Ralph Lauren = preppy luxury
  • Birkenstock = anatomically supportive

Each one knows exactly what it is, and what it is not.

Brand strategy reveals your North Star. It provides the answers that every product decision, every hire, every partnership, and every piece of content ought to flow from: What do we stand for? What are we willing to give up to stand for that? What makes only us the right ones to deliver it?

Your North Star is more consequential than it has ever been. The companies that perform best in the AI era are the ones that did the upstream work first, with precision, honesty and heart. They let AI amplify exactly the right thing.

2. Trust was always earned. AI just made it impossible to fake.

When I ask CEOs what they want their brand to be known for, many respond with some version of, “We want to be the trusted one in our category." But trust is earned, not bought. Earn trust by making and fulfilling a precise, ownable promise, over and over.

For a long time, clever messaging and enough media spend could approximate trust. If you said the right thing loudly enough, people started to believe it. That era is ending. Trust grows at the speed of a coconut tree and falls at the speed of a coconut. AI just made the tree harder to grow and the coconut heavier as it falls.

When a consumer asks AI for a purchasing recommendation, it pulls patterns from Reddit threads, Trustpilot scores, Glassdoor reviews, app store feedback, and news coverage. It distills them into a verdict, not a list of search results.

What AI surfaces is the truth about your brand. Not what you've messaged, but what you've delivered.

Burger King and Chick-fil-A both invest in clever, personality-driven content. But people dislike their experience at Burger King and love their experience at Chick-fil-A. In a recent Axios Harris Poll of brand reputations, Burger King’s is near the bottom, and Chick-fil-A’s near the top.

AI is reading your reputation, not your marketing. The only lever you have is to be so deliberate, precise and honest about your promise that your audiences, AI and human alike, understand and believe it.

3. Consistency compounds. And AI is watching.

Human beings trust what they can predict. Consistency breeds trust.

This is not new. The hardware of our human brains hasn’t changed much in eons. What is new is the scale at which inconsistent content compounds, and the fact that AI is watching.

A marketing team used to produce X amount of content per period. That human bandwidth was a natural guardrail. Human marketers intuitively course-corrected when something felt off-brand. Now a small team with AI can produce 100X that content. The guardrails are absent unless you install them deliberately.

Deliberate brand strategy forms those guardrails. When you commit to your North Star, every decision, every hire, every AI-generated output can be consistent.

Which raises the question brand strategy is meant to answer: Consistent with what, exactly?

  • Volvo = safe driving
  • Lego = creativity
  • Dropbox = simplifying work
  • Dyson = powerful appliances
  • Firefox = privacy in web browsing
  • Poppi = better-for-you soda
  • Timex = reliable watch

Brand strategy poses the question: What is the single thing we stand for and commit to, every time? Answering this is no longer optional. It is infrastructure. Without a clear, committed answer, you cannot produce consistent content at scale. You produce noise at scale. Brand strategy is how you make sure AI is amplifying the right thing.

The truths haven’t changed. The stakes have.

Brand strategy has always been about the same thing: defining your business’s precise and ownable promise so that you can build with fidelity to it.

What AI has changed is the cost of vagueness. The companies that flourish have done the upstream work with precision. The AI era is their moment.

What do you stand for? What are you willing to sacrifice to stand for it? What is your ownable promise?

Brand strategy is how you find them. Your amplifier is waiting.
